Call for Star Trek Fan Submissions

Brooklyn SciFi is proud to join forces with New York City Star Trek Meetup to celebrate 60-years of SciFi's most iconic franchise with a special screening event in Brooklyn on Wednesday, July 24th, and special events at this year's festival, October 5 through the 11th. More details below. Do you have a Star Trek-related fan film you'd like to include in this year's festival? There's still time to submit. Reply to this email for details.

Volunteer as a Screener or Juror

We're looking for SciFi fans interested in volunteering as festival screeners for 2026. Festival screeners are responsible for viewing and rating a minimum of 12 to 15 short films plus one feature film over a 3-week period starting 7/2/26 and ending 7/26/26. Do you have the right stuff? Please complete our screener volunteer form. Training starts today with our first optional Zoom session at 3:00 PM ET and additional options next week. If you have film production, education, media, or industry experience, you can apply for a juror position that will start in August.

NYC Star Trek Meetups regularly showcases sci-fi/comic/fantasy and sci-fi horror comic writers. For the July 24th meetup at O'Keefes Bar, they plan to host an afterwork screening party featuring the latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, along with other themed entertainment, giveaways, and sci-fi artist works. This event is sure to be a great way to meet like-minded Trekkies and Sci-Fi fans in NYC. Come join the fun. It's free, and you may get some Brooklyn SciFi swag!

Deep Space Degenerates Episode 007 Premieres as Brooklyn SciFi Film Festival Continues to Spotlight Independent Science Fiction

What happens when your first day on the job turns into an all-day wait?
In Episode 007 of Deep Space Degenerates, Lore has finally made it through the endless maze of the Hireath Spaceport and reached the dock. Now she just has to wait for the Kalsarikännit. And wait. And wait some more.

As Lore catches sleep wherever she can, completely unaware of the chaos unfolding elsewhere, Captain Zaw finds himself trapped in a conversation nobody wants to have—with an ex-wife who also happens to be his boss. While Lore dreams of finally beginning her career as a navigator, Zaw is discovering that some mistakes never stay in the past.

Deep Space Degenerates is an animated sci-fi comedy following the dysfunctional crew of the cargo hauler Kalsarikännit as they stumble through deep space one terrible decision at a time. Featuring aliens, robots, spaceports, workplace disasters, and cosmic levels of poor judgment, the series continues to build an audience among fans of independent animation and science fiction comedy.

The series has also been featured by the Brooklyn SciFi Film Festival, an organization dedicated to showcasing independent science fiction storytelling from around the world.

THE SCI FI BOOK CLUB

I Who Have Never Known Men

Our selection for July is short but mighty story, and I'm here for it. It has been rediscovered recently on BookTok and is being compared to books like Margaret Atwood’s A Handmaid's Tale and Octavia E Butler's Parable series. Translated from French and published in 1995 then slipped into relative obscurity. The themes are intense but I'm told that the storytelling and the message are well worth it. If you're interested in learning more about the book's resurgence, check out this great Guardian article.

From Goodreads, I Who Have Never Known Men is a story about a group of women imprisoned and guarded. The women have no memory of how they got there, no notion of time, and only a vague recollection of their lives before. What comes next is a story of a young woman's fight to uncover her past and make her own future. People are divided on the story's finer points, but just about everyone I've read has echoed What Is Quinn Reading's review, saying they're grateful for the read and will carry it with them. At approximately 190 pages, I'm glad you'all feel that we should dive in and investigate this kind of story.

A Digital Community For Independent Film

Brooklyn SciFi and the team at Cyber-NY are working on something new. We're building an independent network for film professionals to share and monetize their work while connecting with fans. Our hope is to create a community with a year-round presence that encourages collaboration and the development of an independent streaming platform.

We're looking for intrepid filmmakers to join our beta for free by creating an account profile and uploading several films they're okay with sharing. We won't make your work public without prior consent, and our admin tools allow for self-management and deletion of videos.

We hope you'll join us on this journey as we navigate the changing landscape of art house cinema and independent film. Please sign up for our private beta if you're interested, or reply to this email with questions.
